July 9th: Weekend Excursion to San Gimignano and Siena

So today was a very good but tiring day. We woke up to be downstairs at nine and then took an hour long bus ride to the city of San Gimignano. It is a cool little city that really shows how things were back in medieval times.

Before we went to have lunch, some of us decided to go to the museum of torture where they show all the ways to torture people back in the day. Because I have been to the tower of London to much I thought that it would be something that was not only interesting, but something I could handle. I was sadly mistaken. It started off alright with just reading about stuff like the chastity belts, but then they went into really disgusting tortures like the saw and putting things in people’s throats while they were still alive and I got very queasy. Torture is never fun. It was interesting though to learn that little bit of history.

After that we went to the town of Siena. I noticed while I was there that everything seems to be set up in a spiral kind of way; maybe that is what makes the city so interesting. We went into a church and saw the head of Saint Catherina which was shriveled up and small so it was kind of gross; I wasn't able to look away though.

At 4:30 we decided to climb the tower. Climbing it was not as bad as climbing the Duomo, but there were some places where it was better to be short than tall to get through and up, so that was annoying. Otherwise the view was really amazing and this is where is saw the spiral forms of the city. After that we just took the bus home and it was very relaxing.
