July 3rd: Weekend Excursion to Lucca

Today we went to the city of Lucca which was about an hour’s train ride from Florence. It is one of the only cities that still has the ancient wall protecting the cit intact. We got there around 11 am so it wasn’t too hot yet. We went to the center of the city—and it is a pretty small city—and made that our meeting point. Other than that, they gave us 10 Euros each and told us to go and find lunch.
After lunch we went and climbed this really nice tower that was pretty close to the center of the city. It had trees at the top and it was really pretty, and I got in some pictures with my friends. Then, we went on a bike ride around the wall which was a bit hard in some places because the bikes didn’t have gears and I got one that was at an expert level. But otherwise it was a really nice ride.

We then went to dinner, which was pasta with sauce. For dessert there was vanilla ice cream with raspberries; I never thought there would be a day when I would eat my ice cream with fruit on it but it was actually very delicious and I can’t wait to have it again. Funnily enough, right after we finished dinner we learned that the train we were going to take home at 9:30 was cancelled and we had to run for ten minutes to catch the 8:30 train home or risk coming back really late. It was both terrifying and exhilarating racing through the streets and trying to keep 72 people together to catch one train in complete chaos! In the end though we all did catch thetrain and had a very nice night in.
